Orange Extra Extra Power Carbine Buffer Spring
The stoutest spring in the Sprinco carbine line, noticeably heavier than the Red. Color coded orange.
What It Was Built For
The Orange was engineered for heavy BCG DPMS pattern carbines in .308, 6.5 Creedmoor, .260 Remington and similar, running a standard 7 inch deep M4 extension tube with a short 2.5 inch buffer, including aftermarket heavy buffers, on robustly gassed 16 to 18 inch midlength gas platforms.
It has since proven necessary for tuning over gassed carbines in equivalent heavy calibers on AR-10 pattern tubes with 3.25 inch buffers, and on over gassed rifles in lesser calibers including 5.56.
Do Not Clip Coils
Cutting coils off another Sprinco spring to get a lighter load for a DPMS pattern build leaves you with an unknown spring rate and can damage the rifle. Buy the spring that is built for the platform instead.
Which Sprinco Spring Do You Need?
Sprinco color codes every spring so you can identify what is in a rifle without pulling it apart. Lightest to heaviest:
- Yellow, reduced power — roughly 20% lighter than White, for Simunition, SRTA, and lightweight competition rifles
- White, standard power — the load of a brand new mil-spec M4 spring
- Hot White, intermediate power — between White and Blue
- Blue, enhanced power — roughly 15% greater than White
- Red, extra power — roughly 25% greater than White, for AR-10 and SR-25 pattern with 3.25 inch buffers
- Orange, extra extra power — this one, for DPMS pattern .308 carbines
For a rifle length tube, including the VLTOR A5, use the Green rifle length spring.
The Wire
Sprinco springs are made from chrome silicon wire stock, the same material used in Formula One and motor valve springs, where a spring may see up to 15 million compression cycles in a single race. A carbine will see a fraction of that over its life.
Each spring is heat treated, shot peened, and treated with a proprietary formula intended to hold spring rate over time.
