AR-15 / M16 Bolt Gas Rings

A Wear Part
Gas rings seal the bolt against the carrier so gas pressure drives the cycle rather than escaping around it. They wear from friction every time the rifle cycles, and eventually they stop sealing.
When they go, the symptoms look like a gas problem: sluggish cycling, short stroking, failures to feed or extract. People chase gas blocks and buffer weights for a while before checking a two dollar part.
Checking Yours
Pull the bolt out to its extended position and stand the carrier upright on the bolt face. If the bolt collapses under the weight of the carrier, the rings are worn and it is time to replace them.
Worth keeping a set in the range bag and another on the bench. They cost almost nothing and they are the kind of part you want on hand before you need it.
