FORWARD CONTROLS DESIGN
TGF Trigger Guard
The TGF is machined from 7075 aluminum and fills the gap forward of the pistol grip, between the receiver's trigger guard ears. All sharp edges and corners are removed. Available in standard (straight) and winter profiles, in anodized black, desert tan, or OD green.
Standard or Winter?
The winter version keeps as much constant, unchanged space forward of the trigger bow as possible, rather than tapering as it approaches the receiver's front trigger guard holes. That is where your finger needs room with a glove on.
The space behind the trigger bow is unreachable for your finger either way, so it is kept small and low. That also means the design will not pinch your trigger finger if it ends up resting on the bottom of the guard.
How It Mounts
There is no spring loaded front detent. The front uses a set screw, 5-40 x 3/8 requiring a 1/16 Allen wrench, which sits flush with the receiver rather than protruding. Hand tight only, with a small drop of thread locker such as Loctite 243 or Vibra-Tite VC-3 recommended on the threads.
The rear uses a standard TDP spec trigger guard roll pin, kept because it is reliable, robust, and will not loosen. Note that the TGF does not swing down the way a TDP spec trigger guard does.
Both versions have a canted front edge, which opens the magazine well slightly for anyone who rocks magazines in. If you insert straight into the well instead, the angle takes nothing away.
Receiver Fitment
The TGF is designed for TDP spec forged lower receivers. On receivers that adhere closely to TDP specs it sits near flush with the trigger guard ears. Lowers made from Cerro Forge keyhole forgings generally have taller ears, as do Colt, LMT, and BCM receivers.
ZEV produced receivers have shorter ears, which leaves a bit of the bottom of the TGF exposed. On those it lines up with the grip's corner where the trigger guard is supposed to sit. No bearing on function. Recent Mega lowers with the old atomic whirl marking have been reported to have longer ears that cover it.
The TGF was designed to work with the LMT MARS-L lower's longer trigger guard ears, but the length of those ears varies. In rare cases the area forward of the ears may need fitting on a MARS-L lower.
A Note on Fit and Tolerance
TDP width for a trigger guard is 0.430 with a tolerance of plus or minus 0.003. The TGF is 0.433. The gap between the rear trigger guard ears is specified at 0.438, plus 0.008 and minus 0.000.
Given how loose the tolerance is on that gap, the TGF, or any in-spec trigger guard, may fit snugly or slightly loose depending on the receiver. That is normal. The TDP width of the guard and the specified space inside the ears all but guarantee some play. Similarly, the front right ear hole is specified at 0.125 plus 0.003, and if it lands on the upper end of that range the set screw can rattle.
Forward Controls does not get creative with TDP specs. Making the TGF wider to eliminate play would risk it not fitting Colt, LMT, and BCM lowers that are true to spec. A rifle that is so tight it loses tolerance for debris, sand, and mud is not an improvement. TDP trigger guards swing down, and they could not do that if any foreign object in the way could stop them.
