RBF Reinforced Buffer Retainer
The RBF (Reinforced Buffer retainer, Forward controls) is a strengthened AR buffer retainer, Swiss machined from 17-4 stainless steel bar stock and heat treated to H900 hardness.
The reinforced tip measures 0.102, 10% larger than the TDP spec 0.093. That is as much as the diameter could be increased before running into receiver extension timing incompatibilities. The RBF keeps the TDP retainer's round tip rather than moving to a rectangular tip, so it does not need to be timed and installs per TM instructions.
When every system in an AR functions properly, a reinforced buffer retainer is arguably unnecessary. In practice, mixing parts from different manufacturers with varying adherence to TDP specs makes tolerance stacking common rather than exceptional. This inexpensive part breaks often enough, and when it does it tosses its tip into the lower receiver, usually into the trigger group, and jams the rifle. The billet construction and larger tip are built to prevent that.
The RBF is compatible with AR-15 and M16 mil-spec rifle and carbine receiver extensions, VLTOR A5 receiver extensions, and the PWS Enhanced carbine receiver extension.
Notes
Always wear eye protection while handling springs under pressure, spring loaded pins, and detents.
The RBF is not a fix for an out of spec lower with an incorrectly positioned buffer retainer hole. If you find excessive wear marks on the buffer's front face, warranty exchange the lower receiver.
Receiver extension timing varies. An RE may rotate past dead center by 45 degrees or more on one receiver while managing 15 degrees or less on another, and different REs have different timing values.
