FORWARD CONTROLS DESIGN
ASF-90Q Ambidextrous Safety Selector
The ASF-90Q is a conventional semi auto selector, rotating 90 degrees to fire, with Q offset levers. A joint project between Forward Controls Design and Sons of Liberty Gun Works, where it is known as The Quick.
Which ASF Do You Need?
Two choices: throw angle and lever style.
90 degree is the conventional rotation most shooters already have trained. 50 degree is a short throw, faster to run and requiring less thumb travel. Neither is better; it is a manual of arms question.
Q levers are offset, which clears the thumb differently depending on grip and trigger finger placement. Standard levers sit straight.
The ASF-90Q is 90 degree with Q levers. Also available as the ASF-90 with standard levers, the ASF-50 at 50 degrees with standard levers, and the ASF-50Q at 50 degrees with Q levers.
A Note on Left Hand Setups
Q levers are specific to the standard and left hand versions, unlike the non-Q levers which are interchangeable side to side. If you want a left handed setup with Q levers, that variant has to be selected specifically.
How the Levers Attach
The levers attach to the center via a 420 stainless spring steel roll pin with 800 lb shear strength. The lever to center interface is what carries the load; the pin only holds the two in place.
A design goal was little to no wobble between lever and center, so that interface is held to a tolerance of plus 0.001 and minus 0.000. Note that the combined tolerance across lever and center can, on rare occasions, produce about 0.002 of movement. That is normal and unavoidable, almost imperceptible, and does not affect function.
Why Serrated and Not Dimpled
Forward Controls is known for the AA dimpled pattern on their bolt catches, magazine releases, and forward assists. The ASF levers are serrated instead, and that is deliberate.
As the lever rotates, your finger slides along it. Dimples, or serrations cut diagonally or perpendicular to the lever, only impede that sliding motion and add friction for no benefit. Serrations running parallel to the lever's length stop lateral movement without fighting the finger's travel.
There is a single dimple on each side, serving as the position indicator in place of a pointer. The lever profile is not square either; the outermost portion is tapered so it conforms to the angle of your thumb pad when your hand is on the pistol grip.
